49ers coach Jim Harbaugh’s comments about going with the hot hand at quarterback raised speculation about a quarterback controversy in San Francisco, but there’s no reason to make a choice between Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick just yet.

Harbaugh said Wednesday that Smith still hasn’t been cleared for contact following the concussion he suffered against the Rams in Week 10. Smith never took the team’s “contact” test late last week after suffering symptoms of the concussion and needs to do that before he can make a full return.

“It looks like he will be (cleared) before the week is out,” Harbaugh said during an interview on the Murph & Mac show on KNBR, via Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee. “But not as of now. I’m sure he will be.”

Harbaugh didn’t say who would be starting this week, but he did say that the 49ers have the “opposite of a controversy” at the position because they have two good quarterbacks. We’re not exactly sure what the opposite of a controversy would mean, but we’re pretty sure people will keep referring to it as one until Harbaugh makes his call.
