Ameer Abdullah signs with Lions

The Lions are down to one unsigned pick.

The team announced Wednesday that second-round pick Ameer Abdullah has signed his four-year rookie deal with the club. That leaves only first-round guard Laken Tomlinson to sign before the Lions have the entire class under contract.

Abdullah capped a stellar career at Nebraska in 2014 by running for 1,611 yards and 19 touchdowns. He added three more scores as a receiver, which left him with 48 total touchdowns in four years with the Cornhuskers. Two of those scores came as a returner, which could turn out to be part of his role with the Lions.

Abdullah believes that he has the skills to be an every-down back with the Lions, who also have Joique Bell and Theo Riddick on the depth chart at the position. Moving to the top of the list will require Abdullah to show that he can handle pass protection duties in addition to running the ball and he’ll also have to guard against a repeat of the ball security issues that led to 23 fumbles in college, although only four of them came in his final season.
