The Cardinals’ featured running back got another day of rest on Thursday.
Andre Ellington, who’s dealing with a foot injury, did not practice for the second consecutive day as the Cardinals ready for Sunday’s game at the Giants.
Last week, Ellington put in a pair of limited practices on Thursday and Saturday while resting Friday. He rushed 13 times for 53 yards and caught five passes for 27 yards in Arizona’s 18-17 win vs. San Diego on Monday night.
With a shortened week of preparation leading into the matchup with New York, it’s possible the Cardinals are just being prudent with Ellington. On Wednesday, Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said Ellington’s health was “much better than we hoped” coming out of Monday night, according to the club’s website.
Jonathan Dwyer is the top backup to Ellington.
While Ellington didn’t practice on Thursday, second-year safety Tyrann Mathieu put in his second consecutive full practice of the week. Mathieu, who suffered a torn ACL last December, is soon expected to return to the lineup, though it’s unclear whether that will happen in Week Two, as the Cardinals’ website noted Wednesday.
