The NFL players who have agreed to settle a lawsuit over concussions will not receive their payouts any time soon, as appeals of the settlement are expected to delay payouts until next year.

The Associated Press reports that about 90 former players are appealing a federal judge’s decision to approve a final settlement of the case. Those former players have until August 15 to file their appeal, with responses to that appeal due in September. It may be several months after that before a decision on the appeal is announced.

The lead attorneys for the plaintiffs say the retired players and their families need the money now, but that money won’t be paid out until the appeal is resolved.

The NFL could end up paying $1 billion to former players suffering from Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s ALS and other neurological conditions.
