Earlier this offseason, it looked like the Jets and linebacker Bart Scott were destined to part ways.
The team gave him permission to shop around for a trade, Scott was said to be frustrated by his role on the defense and it looked like Scott would soon be saying that he can’t wait to play for another team. Nothing happened with a trade -- not surprising given his $4.2 million salary for the 2012 season -- and attention around the Jets turned to other matters. Something about a backup quarterback.
Scott’s still around and he said Tuesday that he’s spoken to Rex Ryan about his role on the team moving forward. Scott told Bruce Beck of WNBC in New York that he’s comfortable with that role.
“I came here and I bought the lakefront property. I was all in and I’m still all in,” Scott said. “It’s just communication. We had a talk about some things and iron some things out. Me and Rex had a great conversation. I’m comfortable with my place and my role on the team. I look forward to having a great bounce-back year.”
Since his salary is guaranteed, the Jets won’t gain anything by cutting Scott so they’re likely happy to hear his change of heart. What Scott’s role will turn out being remains to be seen, but it’s been clear over the last two seasons that Scott’s skills have slipped. He’s still useful against the run, but he’s a liability against the pass and that means he’s off the field as often as he’s on it.
