The Patriots added wide receiver Michael Floyd on waivers Thursday, a day after the Cardinals waived him in the wake of a DUI arrest on Monday morning.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick opened his Friday press conference by discussing the move and said that the team wanted more depth at wide receiver than they had with the now-departed Griff Whalen.

“We felt that obviously we’d rather work with Floyd at this point in time,” Belichick said. “We’re aware of the situation that came up earlier in the week. We’ll let that legal situation play itself out, but really we’ll just see how it goes. He’s a player that we haven’t had before. We look forward to working with him and we’ll just see how it goes.”

In response to questions about Floyd also being arrested on similar charges while at Notre Dame as well, Belichick said it was “quite a different situation” this time around without elaborating on any differences and that the team takes “the information we have and make what we feel like is the best decision.” He also said that he didn’t know if playing for former Patriots offensive coordinator Charlie Weis in college would help him grasp the Patriots system.

Belichick said that Floyd will travel with the team to Denver this weekend and that he thinks there’s value in seeing how the team goes about its business even if he doesn’t wind up playing in the game.
