While speaking to the media at the combine last week, Bills General Manager Doug Whaley said there was some work to be done if the team was going to retain running back C.J. Spiller.

Spiller is set to become a free agent next month and Whaley indicated that there’s a gap between the two sides as they talk about a contract that would keep the former first-round pick in town. During an appearance on Sirius XM NFL Radio with Rich Gannon and Bruce Murray on Tuesday, Spiller said that gap isn’t so big that a return to Buffalo is out of the question.

“There’s a possibility that I could be in a Bills uniform,” Spiller said. “We never know how this situation is going to play out. The organization knows that I want to be there, so pretty much the ball is in their court. At the same time we’re going to weigh all our options and see what best suits me. The biggest thing is you want to go somewhere where you’re wanted. That’s the biggest thing. That’s pretty much how I’m approaching this thing. I’m looking forward to it.”

Spiller outlined some of the other things he’s looking for and mentioned a system that will utilize him to the best of his abilities along with a “great quarterback” and a chance to play in the playoffs. The Bills are unlikely to have a great quarterback leading the offense next year, but their offense should offer plenty of chances to run the ball in support of a defense that’s capable of making a postseason push.

All of that is moot if the numbers don’t add up, though, and there’s a couple more weeks for that to happen before everyone will have a chance to woo Spiller.
