The Cardinals got today’s game in Chicago off to as good a start as possible, as David Johnson took the opening kickoff and raced 108 yards for a touchdown.
The return was tied for the second-longest kickoff return in NFL history, behind only a 109-yarder by Minnesota’s Cordarrelle Patterson. There have now been 9 kickoff returns of 107 yards or longer in NFL history. All nine of them have come since 2007.
Johnson appeared to benefit from some members of the Bears’ coverage unit letting up, thinking he wouldn’t bring the kick out from eight yards deep in the end zone. But Johnson never hesitated and never even had to slow down once he had a full head of steam.
The Bears’ poor coverage dug them an early hole, and now they’ll try to dig themselves out.
