If new Browns coach Rob Chudzinski is leaning one way or another at quarterback, it’s hard to tell.
Chudzinski did his best to tap-dance around questions about the future of Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell during an interview on 92.3 The Fan, effectively not taking any position at all.
“I’m pleased with his progress. His approach has been outstanding,” Chudzinski said of Weeden, via the Canton Repository.
He added that coaches were “working on [Weeden’s] mechanics and speeding up his delivery, . . . just getting to know him.”
Asked directly if Campbell has a chance to start, Chudzinski replied: “We’ll just see as we go forward. I expect both of these guys to compete. I don’t know any other way.”
The Browns are practically obligated to find out if Weeden’s capable of owning the job on his own, even though the current staff wasn’t the one that drafted him in the first round last year.
Guys such as Campbell, and usually Campbell himself, are available annually, and if they need to turn to him this season, it seems reasonable they’d be ready to re-invest in the position a year from now.
