It’s one thing for DeAndre Hopkins or Sammy Watkins or A.J. Green to get the better of cornerback Darrelle Revis. It’s another for a journeyman to rocket past Revis and make him look like a guy who shouldn’t be on the field.
On Thursday night, Marquise Goodwin did just that, wth an 84-yard catch and run. It was Goodwin’s first touchdown since 2013, and the yardage exceeded Goodwin’s total production in 2014 and 2015 combined.
It will be interesting to see whether the Bills keep targeting Revis, who played for Buffalo coach Rex Ryan with the Jets, a tenure that included an acrimonious holdout in 2010. No one would be surprised if Ryan keeps going after Revis, again and again and again.
The Jets signed Revis in 2015 to a contract that pays out $39 million fully guaranteed over three years. Of that amount, $6 million is fully guaranteed in 2017. Another $9 million isn’t. Absent significant improvement from Revis, chances are they’ll pay him $6 million to not play for them in lieu of giving him $15 million to be on the field.
Until then, the Jets need to figure out whether to give Revis more safety help -- or whether to ultimately make him a safety.
