Steelers running back DeAngelo Williams complained after Week One about way his age has “to play a part” in the discussion about how well he’s playing and his longevity was an issue again after Sunday’s 24-16 win over the Bengals.
Williams went over 10,000 career yards from scrimmage while running 32 times for 94 yards and catching four passes for 38 yards in the victory, which makes it hard to avoid noticing that the 33-year-old is still producing at a point many running backs never get to in their careers.
Williams wasn’t any more ready to talk about age on Sunday, saying “I’m a football player first and I’m an old guy second,” or about what hitting a milestone means to his career.
“It’s yards, man,” Williams said, via the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “I’m hunting one thing and one thing only and that’s a Super Bowl. The 10,000 yards up until this point haven’t translated into a Super Bowl so it means nothing to me.”
Williams doesn’t like talking about his age, but provided the masses with more fodder on that front when his phone rang after the game. The Nickelback song “Rockstar,” which came out in 2005, served as the ring tone for the running back whose old school ways continue to serve him well on the field.
