When Seahawks receiver Doug Baldwin scored a touchdown in the Super Bowl, he decided to celebrate in about as classless a way as possible: He put the ball on the ground and squatted over it, pretending to be pooping.

What on earth was Baldwin thinking? Baldwin now says that it was a matter of relief after two weeks of thinking he’d have a tough game on his hands against Patriots cornerback Darrelle Revis.

“It was just a built up frustration I was letting out,” Baldwin said on 710 ESPN Seattle.

Why couldn’t Baldwin just let go of the frustration by spiking the football? Baldwin says now that he should have done that, rather than doing something that drew a 15-yard penalty, a fine, and a lot of scorn.

“I do regret the fact that it cost my team 15 yards, and to the fans, ultimately I apologize to anybody who I offended in any way,” Baldwin said. “It wasn’t about that. It was a competitive situation. So to all the 12s, all the fans, that’s not what it’s about. So I apologize to anyone if I offended you.”

Baldwin’s celebration was stupid. At least now he realizes it.
