Seahawks safety Earl Thomas has taken a big step toward getting back on the field.

Thomas has passed his physical and is off the physically unable to perform list, Field Yates of ESPN reports.

That doesn’t necessarily mean Thomas will start practicing immediately or that he’ll play in the preseason opener. But it does mean that he’s making significant progress in his recovery from the shoulder injury he suffered in the NFC Championship Game. It would seem almost certain that Thomas will play in the regular-season opener on September 13.

That’s very good news in Seattle, as there had been talk that Thomas might not be ready to go for the start of the season. The Seahawks can expect to have Thomas on the field when the season starts.
