Chiefs safety Eric Berry was named the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year for returning to a high level of play in 2015 after being diagnosed with lymphoma during the 2014 season and now he’s been awarded with another prize in recognition for his resilience.
The Professional Football Writers of America have named Berry the winner of the George Halas Award. The Halas award has been given since 1970 to a player, coach or staff member “who overcomes the most adversity to succeed.” He’s the first Chiefs player to receive the award.
Berry played every game, returned to the starting lineup for Kansas City in Week Two and played a big role in helping the Chiefs advance to the postseason. He was named to the All-Pro team after ending the year with 61 tackles, 10 passes defensed and two interceptions.
There’s been a different, less frightening kind of uncertainty to Berry’s offseason this time around. He received the franchise tag from the Chiefs, but has not signed his tender or a multi-year deal with the July 15 deadline to do so approaching quickly.
