Finding Jim Haslett’s replacement hasn’t been a particularly easy task.
The Redskins have requested interviews with several different candidates, but several of them have either been blocked from interviewing or chosen not to interview for the position. The latest addition to that list is Chiefs linebackers coach Gary Gibbs.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Wednesday that the Chiefs rejected the interview request, but Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star reports that Gibbs made the decision to pass. Either way, the result is another candidate scrubbed from consideration for Jay Gruden’s staff in Washington.
Gibbs, who followed Barry Switzer as head coach of Oklahoma in 1989, has been with the Chiefs since 2009 and will presumably return to Andy Reid’s staff for the 2015 season.
The 49ers and Bills blocked their respective defensive coordinators Vic Fangio and Jim Schwartz from interviewing for the opening. Chargers linebackers coach Joe Barry, 49ers defensive backs coach Ed Donatell and Wade Phillips have interviewed or are scheduled for interviews.
