Even though this isn’t viewed as a banner year for quarterbacks, the teams that need quarterbacks are still taking a close look at the ones available.

According to the Bills’ official website, the Bills are conducting a private workout with West Virginia’s Geno Smith today.

The Bills sent a contingent including general manager Buddy Nix, assistant GM Doug Whaley and director of pro personnel Tom Gibbons to Smith’s pro day.

Smith said he expected to have “between 10 to 12, maybe more” such workouts prior to the draft.

While the overall talent of this class is worth questioning, the new rookie salary scale makes it easier to take a chance on one of these guys by taking away the extreme financial penalty. Coupled with the utter desperation of some teams to find passers and sell tickets, it’s clear that several of these guys will be overdrafted.

Whether the Bills overdraft Smith or Ryan Nassib or one of the others, it seems clear they’re pointed that direction after releasing Ryan Fitzpatrick.
