Two weeks ago today, quarterback Connor Halliday was waiting for his phone to ring during the third day of the draft. It eventually did, with an offer to join Washington as an undrafted free agent.
But with his first rookie minicamp not yet starting, Halliday apparently has decided not to pursue a career in the NFL, at least not right now.
As noted Friday, Halliday already is gone from the roster. He reportedly has retired.
“I can’t speak for the decision that he made,” coach Jay Gruden told reporters on Saturday. “He just chose to jump on a plane and head to the house. I haven’t had a chance to talk with him yet. He just left me a voice message, but I’m sure he had personal reasons behind it.”
So will Washington sign a fourth quarterback? Not necessarily.
"[M]oving forward, we have three quarterbacks on our roster,” Gruden said. “We’re looking at another two guys out here today, and one more practice today, and then we’ll make a decision about whether or not we bring four to camp.”
Halliday threw 713 passes in 13 games in 2013. A broken ankle ended his senior season prematurely.
