Jets end Bryce Petty’s wait at No. 103

The Jets quarterback situation just got a bit more interesting.

The Jets and Jaguars agreed to swap picks in the fourth round and the Jets used the 103rd selection to make Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty the newest member of the team. They sent the 229th pick to Jacksonville to facilitate the swap.

Petty’s stock was all over the chart leading up to the draft with some reports touting him as a late first-round possibility and others putting him behind players like Garrett Grayson and Brett Hundley. The low side of that projection proved to be correct, but he wound up going to a team without long-term certainty at the position.

The issue for Petty is that there’s likely to be a lot of bumps in the transition from the Baylor offense to an NFL system. The presence of Geno Smith and Ryan Fitzpatrick means that there shouldn’t be undue pressure for him to overcome them immediately, although anyone familiar with the trajectory of recent Jets seasons is aware that things don’t always work that way.

After adding Brandon Marshall and Devin Smith at wideout this offseason, there’s going to be higher expectations for the quarterbacks than there were in the last two years. If they fail to meet them, there will be calls for Petty even if he’s still getting used to life in the big leagues.
