If the Broncos lose quarterback Brock Osweiler in free agency, Colin Kaepernick could be Plan B.
We noted this morning that a trade with the 49ers for Kaepernick could be an option for the Broncos, and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that the Broncos will have interest in Kaepernick if they can’t hold onto Osweiler.
It remains to be seen what the 49ers would want in a trade for Kaepernick. They said early in the offseason that they expected to bring Kaepernick back and let him compete with Blaine Gabbert for the starting quarterback job in new coach Chip Kelly’s offense. But Kaepernick’s agents want to seek a trade, and they may think Gary Kubiak’s offense is a better fit. They also may think Kaepernick has a better chance to succeed on a team with a Super Bowl-winning defense than he is on a rebuilding team like San Francisco.
So Kaepernick should be watching Osweiler closely. If Osweiler leaves Denver, Kaepernick may be heading to the Broncos. If Osweiler stays, Kaepernick will be left wondering where his 2016 home will be.
