Teams needing to make room on their rosters for draft picks and undrafted free agents have cut loose some veteran players this week and two of them have landed with the Lions on waivers.
The Lions announced Friday that they have been awarded linebacker Cory Greenwood and guard Derek Hardman off of waivers. Greenwood was waived by the Chiefs on Thursday after playing all 48 games for them over the last three seasons. He had 34 tackles and one forced fumble while playing mostly on special teams in Kansas City. Greenwood signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent, but the Ontario native was the third overall pick of the CFL draft in 2010.
Hardman was a member of the Buccaneers for the last three seasons, albeit one that bounced on and off the roster several times over his three years with the team. He played 15 games overall with the team, starting four times back in 2010.
Neither player projects to be a difference maker for the Lions this season, but they’ll add to competition for spots at the back end of the Detroit roster. If they can do that, they’ll have some value to the Lions even if they don’t wind up making the team.
