Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham has issued a warning to Dolphins running back Ricky Williams: Throw an illegal crackback block when the teams play Sunday, and it won’t be the referee you have to worry about.
“All I can say to Ricky Williams -- I want him to know this -- if he hits one of our DBs in the back on a crack block, then I’m coming on the field,” Cunningham said. “I mean, he’s had a couple of knockouts, but they’ve been nonlegal. I’ll just put it as that.”
So is Williams shaking in his cleats at the thought of the 64-year-old Cunningham coming after him? Unfortunately, we don’t know, because Williams didn’t talk to reporters after Cunningham made his comments.
Dolphins coach Tony Sparano was told of Cunningham’s comments and said, “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” before laughing at the thought of Cunningham physically confronting Williams.
