It sounds like lots of things are subject to change with the 0-3 Lions, including who will be calling the plays.

No change is coming yet, but Lions coach Jim Caldwell was asked in his Monday press conference if he’s thought about taking over the play-calling duties from offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi.

The short answer,” Caldwell said, “is no.”

In response to what the longer answer might be, Caldwell said he’s only giving the short answer today. Caldwell spoke to the media about 12 hours after the Lions fell to 0-3 with a Sunday Night Football loss to the Lions. Coaches generally spend the first part of Monday evaluating the just-completed game, then move on to game planning and making other key decisions for the week ahead.

The Lions are averaging just 45 rushing yards per game thus far, the fewest in the league, and are 23rd in scoring at 18.7 points per game.

Asked if play calling is an issue, Caldwell said, “I think it still boils down to execution.”
