Christopher Gasper of the Boston Globe, who’s manning the beat now that our friend Mike Reiss has gone to ESPNBoston.com, reports that Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo suffered a sprained MCL on Monday night against the Bills.
There’s conflicting information as to the degree of the sprain. Once source told Gasper that it’s a Grade III sprain, requiring 6-8 weeks to heal. Another source said the timetable is “not that bad,” but the source apparently did not dispute the Grade III diagnosis.
Mayo was the 2008 rookie defensive player of the year, in a near-unanimous vote. (One of the 50 voters picked Bengals linebacker Keith Rivers, who missed much of the season after having an unfortunate meeting with the crown of Hines Ward’s helmet. The writer in question later acknowledged his blunder.)
