Mike Goodson finally beats weapons charge

Mike Goodson

FILE - In this May 30, 2013, file photo, New York Jets running back Mike Goodson towels off sweat during NFL football practice in Florham Park, N.J. The Jets reported for training camp without Goodson. The running back, who is facing serious legal issues, was placed on the reserve-did not report list as the players arrived for training camp at SUNY Cortland on Thursday, July 25, 2013. Goodson, signed as a free agent in the offseason, was arrested on drug and weapons possession charges in May along with a friend in New Jersey. The case was sent to a grand jury last month. It was not immediately certain if Goodson’s absence was related to his legal situation. (AP Photo/Rich Schultz, File)

Running back Mike Goodson is no longer in the NFL. But he also no longer has to worry about going to prison.

Via Ben Horowitz of NJ.com, a judge dismissed gun-possession charges against Goodson after his friend, Garant Evans, got five years behind bars after claiming responsibility for the gun.

Evans pleaded guilty to the crime in May 2015, telling prosecutors that Goodson did not know that the gun was present in a rented SUV back in May 2013.

The arrest happened after the GMC Yukon rented by Goodson but driven by Evans was found stopped in traffic at 3:30 a.m. Both men appeared drunk; Goodson was “asleep, slobbering and covered in his own vomit.” (If you’re ever going to be covered in vomit, it’s always better that it be your own.)

A loaded .45 caliber Taurus handgun was found in the glove compartment.

Goodson’s career never really recovered from the incident. He played only two games in 2013, thanks to a four-game suspension under the substance-abuse policy and a knee injury. In 2014, the Jets cut Goodson after he failed to report for a mandatory minicamp.

He’s now apparently free and clear to return to the NFL, if anyone is interested. In the 14 months since the Jets released him, no one has been.
