MIXED SIGNALS ON JOSH MORGAN’S STATUS

Though 49ers receiver Josh Morgan acknowledged on Thursday to Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat that Morgan developed a staph infection after the first preseason game of 2008, against the Raiders, San Fran coach Mike Nolan did his best Sgt. Schulz impersonation when asked about the situation. Here’s the excerpt of the quotes circulated by the team to the media (and to us) on Thursday: Q: As far as Josh Morgan, is he back up to weight after his staph infection? “Who?” Q: Josh Morgan. “Is Josh Morgan? That was written and I don’t even know if it’s accurate to be honest with you. That’s all speculation with weight loss and this and that. That’s hearsay information. It didn’t come from [Jim Ferguson] did it?” Q: It came from Josh Morgan. “Did it?” Q: I guess the questions is, is he back to . . . . “He’s doing a good job in practice.” We realize that the “S” word strikes fear in the heart of football coaches other than those in Cleveland (since they’ve gotten, you know, used to it there), but the Lou Costello routine is a bit much. It almost makes us think that another player on the team has a staph infection, too, and that the organization is doing everything it can to cover it all up. That’s all just speculation. There’s only one guy on the team who is known to have had a staph infection. Unless the guy who had the staph infection is wrong, or lying.
