Mort Tries To Explain Favre’s Text Message To Dilfer

Given that Brett Favre seems to be preparing to end his Second Annual Retirement, there’s one awkward loose end that needs to be addressed. Why did Favre recently answer a text-message question from ESPN’s Trent Dilfer regarding a possible Second Annual Unretirement with an all-caps “NO”? As it currently stands, it appears that Favre flat-out lied to Dilfer. During a Wednesday morning appearance on ESPN Radio’s Mike & Mike In The Morning, Mort threw Favre a bone. (Mike Golic first inspected the thing for any remaining non-NutriSystem meat product.) Mort suggests that Favre was answering only the question of whether he had hired a personal trainer. But that’s not how ESPN.com’s Kevin Seifert characterized Dilfer’s question on Monday. Seifert wrote that Dilfer asked whether there is “any chance [Favre] would consider playing in 2009.” We’re trying to find the video or a transcript in an effort to clear this one up. But if Dilfer asked Favre what Seifert said Dilfer asked Favre, it’s hard not to wonder whether Mort (whom we really like and respect) is trying to keep the pump primed with Favre and agent Bus Cook for information about Favre’s status.
