NFL responds to Romo’s radio rant

After Tuesday’s radio rant from Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo to ESPN’s Colin Cowherd (who was scheduled to be one of the media personalities at Romo’s now-scuttled fantasy football event), the league office reached out to PFT with some specific responses to Romo’s contentions.

The NFL says it did not delay in its efforts to express concerns about the event, and that the NFL raised the issue as soon as the league became aware of the planned event.

The league also contends that it spoke to the event’s organizers on more than one occasion. Romo claims the NFL never contacted the organizers, opting instead only to communicate with the union, and with players and their parents.

The league denies the persistent accusation that the NFL called players or their parents directly, a position the league has taken since the issue first surfaced. Romo has accused the NFL of trying to scare players away from participating in the event.

Also, the NFL points out that the convention, as originally promoted, was set for the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino in Las Vegas. (A Facebook post made the same claim.) Organizers later characterized the event as being held at a Convention Center. Nevertheless, the Convention Center is affiliated with the Venetian, which makes it off limits for player involvement.

None of this will likely make Romo feel any better about what happened. But if he hadn’t scheduled the thing to occur on casino property, the convention would be happening as scheduled.
