The Panthers are thinning out the ranks at cornerback, and have released Darius Butler, a league source tells PFT.

Butler, a former second-round pick of the Patriots, came to the Panthers last season on a waiver claim, but couldn’t win a starting job on a team with one starting-caliber corner.

The Panthers have also released cornerback R.J. Stanford, according to his agent.

At the moment, they have starters Chris Gamble and Captain Munnerlyn, along with Josh Norman and Josh Thomas. They’re likely to keep extra safeties to shore up a miserable special teams unit.
