The season has ended before it began for Patriots tight end Michael Williams.

Williams has suffered a torn ACL and is expected to go on injured reserve, Jim McBride of the Boston Globe reports.

Although Williams would have been no better than third on the tight end depth chart behind Rob Gronkowski and Martellus Bennett, he was expected to be an important part of the offense this season. A 270-pound former offensive tackle, Williams is a good blocker who played 40 percent of the Patriots’ offensive snaps and 33 percent of the Patriots’ special teams snaps last season.

Williams suffered the injury at practice while doing seven-on-seven work.
