Ravens Make It Official With Beck

The Baltimore Ravens officially signed former Miami Dolphins quarterback John Beck, the team announced today. Signed to a one-year contract, Beck’s addition creates competition for the backup quarterback job held last season by former Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith. The move reunites Beck with Ravens offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, who coached Beck in Miami during a 1-15 season two years ago. Beck visited the Ravens prior to the 2007 NFL Draft after a prolific career at BYU. “John is a player we evaluated thoroughly in preparing for the 2007 draft,” Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said in a statement. “He was a very productive college player, but what also impressed our scouts was how competitive he is. We like to bring in good athletes who love to compete and he fits that.” Beck went 0-4 as a starter as a rookie, passing for one touchdown and three interceptions with seven fumbles, losing five. He completed 60 of 107 passes for 559 yards, rushing for one touchdown. The Dolphins cut Beck days after drafting West Virginia quarterback Pat White.
