Last month, the Ravens made the unusual move of announcing that they would release defensive tackle Terrence Cody when teams were allowed to make such moves after the Super Bowl.

It was unusual because teams rarely telegraph such intentions and because Cody was set to become a free agent in March anyway, but later word that Cody was being investigated for animal cruelty helped explain their desire to move Cody off the roster sooner rather than later.

Cody’s agent denied that his client was guilty of cruelty to a dog he says died of worms, but the Ravens have gone ahead and followed through on their decision to part ways with Cody immediately. The team announced Cody’s release on Monday.

Cody only played in one game for the Ravens in 2014 and never really made good on the promise he showed at Alabama. That promise led the Ravens to make Cody a second-round pick in 2010, but he was mainly a backup in five seasons with Baltimore.
