Report: Saints to make long-term offer to Pierre Thomas soon

The man named Pierre is about to get lucky.

According to FOX 8 in New Orleans, the Saints plan to continue their recent spending spree (on players, not prescription medications) by offering a long-term contract to running back Pierre Thomas.

The report takes on even more credence than usual, given that Saints owner Tom Benson also owns FOX 8.

Thomas, a restricted free agent, has not yet signed his one-year tender offer. He had the best season of his career in 2009, with 793 yards rushing and a per-carry average of 5.4 yards. He added 302 yards on 39 receptions. Not bad for a guy who was undrafted in 2007 out of Illinois.

The magnitude of the offer remains to be seen. But with Reggie Bush getting $8 million in 2010 after putting up 390 yards rushing and 335 receiving last year, an $11 million salary for the coming season sounds about right.
