A 49ers-Broncos trade involving 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is “not likely” during this week’s NFL Draft, Mike Klis of 9News in Denver reported Wednesday.
Klis said the teams have had “zero talks” about such a deal to this point.
A previous ESPN report said 49ers general manager Trent Baalke thought a trade of Kaepernick was “possible” this week. Maybe that was linked to a real thought Baalke had, or maybe it was just based on the fact that every team will have conversations during the draft about trading picks and adding assets.
Broncos General Manager John Elway met with Kaepernick earlier in the offseason and explored trading for him, but last week called discussions “dormant.” The Broncos have wanted Kaepernick to take a pay cut to accomodate a deal, and thus far he has refused.
In separate tweets, Klis wrote that the Broncos will continue to be patient with their quarterback search and that their internal deadline for finding a veteran quarterback is closer to the start of organized team activity (OTA) practices later in May than the draft. The only quarterbacks currently on the Broncos roster are Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian.
The Broncos hold the final pick of Thursday night’s first round of the NFL Draft, at No. 31.
