The Jets might have won last night if quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick had been able to connect with tight end Kellen Davis on a fourth-down pass in the end zone. But Davis didn’t realize the ball was coming to him until it was too late, and the ball fell incomplete.
After the game, Fitzpatrick said he read the defense correctly, as Davis was the third option with both Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker covered.
“They were doubling our best guys,” Fitzpatrick said. “I would love to throw to Brandon. I would love to throw to Deck, but that was the wise decision there with them doubling those guys. I don’t regret the read at all. It was the right read.”
Davis acknowledged that he wasn’t aware that he was the intended receiver on the play until it was too late.
“I didn’t see the ball until it was already past me,” Davis said.
On a night when the Jets had a number of missed opportunities, that was the biggest. One miscommunication cost the Jets seven points, and probably the game.
