The Redskins saw Brian Orakpo leave the team as a free agent this offseason and they’re working to make sure their other incumbent starting outside linebacker stays around a little longer.

Ryan Kerrigan is entering the final year of his contract with the team and said Monday that “talks were progressing pretty well” about a deal that would keep him in Washington for 2016 and beyond. General Manager Scot McCloughan didn’t put a timeline on talks, but said it’s a priority for the team to hold onto Kerrigan for as long as possible.

“Just the fact that we’re in negotiations proves he wants to be around us for a long time,” McCloughan said, via ESPN.com. “I want him to have a second contract and hopefully a third contract with the Redskins. He’s what I look for in a football player. Every day he’s there trying to make himself better.”

McCloughan said that the team is also working to lock up left tackle Trent Williams, who is also heading into the final year of his deal with the team. He indicated talks with Williams are in a similar place to the talks with Kerrigan and added that it was “very important” for the team “to take care of our own” as the organization moves forward.
