As the Saints try to improve a defense that has struggled significantly over the last two years, they’ve added a long-time defensive specialist who had been out of the NFL for a year.
Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Saints have hired Peter Giunta to serve as senior defensive assistant.
Giunta served as defensive backs coach of the Giants from 2006 through 2014. He was fired by former head coach Tom Coughlin last January.
Previously, Giunta worked as defensive backs coach for the Chiefs from 2001 through 2005. Before that, he served as defensive coordinator of the Rams.
Giunta, 59, also has coached with the Jets and Eagles. He spent 10 years at the college level.
