The Broncos have added quarterback Peyton Manning to the reserve/retired list. The Lions hope to do the same with receiver Calvin Johnson, if he indeed retires.
In Seattle, running back Marshawn Lynch has announced his retirement, and the team has acknowledged it. However, the Seahawks still haven’t placed Lynch on the reserve/retired list.
Both player and team have been mum about the situation. Absent a roster move by Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. ET, Lynch will count $11.5 million against the Seattle salary cap. While that amount can be removed at any time via placement of Lynch on the reserve/retired list or by cutting him, it would be odd for Lynch’s salary to be carried under the 2016 cap if it’s already known he won’t be playing in 2016.
It’s hard not to wonder whether Lynch hopes to engineer his outright release, so that he could play for any other team at any time he wants, without having to later persuade the Seahawks to relinquish his rights. If so, he’s a smart man.
