Shawntae Spencer stays in the Bay Area

Eight years ago, Pitt cornerback Shawntae Spencer didn’t get an invitation to the Scouting Combine. And, proving conclusive that the folks who work for the scouting services don’t work for NFL teams for a reason, Spencer was drafted in round two. (Facing Larry Fitzgerald in practice tends to get a guy ready for the next level.)

Spencer’s time with the 49ers has ended, but he’ll be staying in the Bay Area. Per a league source, Spencer has agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Raiders.

The Raiders need cornerbacks, after losing Nnamdi Asomugha last year and running off Stanford Routt and Chris Johnson. The move reunites Spencer with Raiders defensive coordinator Jason Tarver, who worked for seven years with Spencer in San Francisco.

Spencer fell out of favor under new coach Jim Harbaugh, which ultimately led to Spencer’s release.
