SINGLETARY FACES MORE PANTS-DROPPING QUESTIONS

San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Singletary is now more than a week removed from his infamous halftime mooning, but he’s not done facing questions about it. In a conference call with reporters today, Singletary answered several questions about his odd decision to motivate his players by showing them his backside. The first question was about whether the media circus surrounding the incident is a distraction for the 49ers. “No, because I’m not going to let it be,” Singletary said. “The most important thing for us is we have to focus on the things we have to focus on as a football team, and that is getting better and winning football games. And all of the other things, they may continue to go on outside of us, but here, we’re going to continue to focus on the task at hand.” Singletary also said he’s surprised the story of his pants-dropping has become the talk of the NFL. “I guess there’s not a whole lot going on elsewhere in the NFL,” Singletary said. “I’m pretty amazed.” Singletary had previously said he wanted to know who told the media about the incident, and in today’s comments he suggested that talking to the media about the incident was “sabotaging” the team. But he also says he’s not too worried about it. “Even in the interviews that I said, ‘I’m going to find out who it was,’ that’s simply because we as an organization felt that this is something that shouldn’t have happened,” Singletary said. “We need to find out who it was and be able to deal with it so that going forward there is no more sabotaging, or whatever. But I think for me the best thing is to just let it go. I’m not going to really look at, ‘Who did it? Who said it?’” And although most people would probably be worried about their bosses’ reaction if they mooned an employee on company time, Singletary declared himself “absolutely not” concerned about whether the 49ers’ owners would have a problem with the incident. Singletary says he’s just focused on Sunday’s game against the Cardinals. If the 49ers look as bad in Singletary’s second game as they did in his first, it’s scary to think what motivational ploy he might try for an encore.
