On Saturday, Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said that he has not been contacted about the head-coaching job with the Broncos. “That’s a rumor I haven’t heard and nobody contacted me about that,” Stoops told ESPN.com. “I don’t know anything about it. I’m preparing for a national championship and that’s where all my focus and concentrations are.” Stoops said that his only knowledge of his supposed candidacy comes from media reports. “Obviously, I’m not a candidate and I’m sure somebody might have told me about that other than you guys,” Stoops said. “That’s not something I’m concerned about whatsoever. It’s a great organization but I’m not a candidate for it.” Stoops and the Sooners will face the Florida Gators for the BcS National Championship on Thursday. (We crown the real NCAA National Champ at CFT, if you’re interested.) He didn’t rule out taking an NFL job at some point down the road. “At some point in my career, that might be the case,” Stoops said. “Everybody wants you to tell them what you’ll do in 10 years from now. Who knows? I don’t know.” What we know is what we say every year at this time. When a college coach is connected to another job at this time of the year, when recruiting is reaching a crescendo, he needs to say nothing (or, at a minimum, deny that he’s a candidate and/or that he’s interested). And if he decides to explore the job and/or take it, he needs to just leave. Any uncertainty could cause the recruiting class to scatter before the institution has an opportunity to stop the bleeding. In Stoops’ case, the Broncos haven’t contacted him yet. Fine. But if they come calling on Friday, he needs to say nothing at all unless and until he’s taking the job.
