With no players receiving the franchise tag or transition tag and only a couple of guys being slapped with restricted free agency tenders, a league source tells us that the current calm comes from an effort by teams to find a way to get a step ahead of the system in the uncapped year.
Though it’s unknown whether anything will be discovered, teams are waiting to see whether any other teams come up with some strategy for tilting the playing field in favor of the franchises.
Much of the focus is on the Redskins, given new G.M. Bruce Allen’s reputation for coming up with creative ways to make the most of the free agency and cap rules. (Though the Redskins have no one who is expected to receive the franchise tag, they have several players who’ll be eligible for restricted free agency, including quarterback Jason Campbell and cornerback Carlos Rogers.)
Again, it’s unknown whether the efforts will be successful. But that’s the big reason for the lack of activity to date.
