Ted Ginn made the rounds of other teams since the start of free agency, but he’s wound up right where he began.
The 49ers announced Thursday evening that Ginn has re-signed with the team on a one-year deal. It will be Ginn’s third season with the team after coming over from the Dolphins in a trade just before the 2010 draft.
“We are glad that Ted has decided to return to the 49ers in 2012,” said general manager Trent Baalke in a statement. “He is a versatile player and an excellent teammate that will continue to play an important role for us on both offense and special teams.”
Ginn has never made much happen as a receiver -- 19 catches in 2011 -- but he’s been a dynamic returner since entering the league. Ginn has three punt return and three kickoff return touchdowns in his career.
The 49ers definitely missed him when a knee injury kept him out of the game and forced Kyle Williams into the spot. Williams fumbled twice to set up two Giants scores in a 20-17 49ers loss. With Mario Manningham and Randy Moss joining the Niners, returning figures to be Ginn’s biggest role with the 49ers in 2012.
Ginn visited the Vikings, Lions and Ravens before deciding to come back to the Niners.
