Jim Zorn’s stay of execution and Washington’s improved play has taken some of the national spotlight away from the 3-9 Redskins.
But the wackiness is happening in Washington, whether we write about it or not.
Of note this week was a report from Jason Reid of the Washington Post that Redskins executive vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato and owner Dan Snyder recently attended a Texas game together to scout Colt McCoy.
The idea that Snyder is out scouting talent seems counterproductive to former Redskins coach Marty Schottenheimer.
“When you send Dan [Snyder] out along with Vinny Cerrato, Vinny’s going to tell him whatever he thinks Dan wants to hear,” Schottenheimer said on SIRIUS this week. “Dan, God love him, I don’t know that the analysis and evaluation of quarterbacks is necessarily down his alley.”
Schottenheimer is up front in his distaste for Cerrato.
“I’ve said for a long time, in my opinion the problem down there--obviously it starts at the top with Dan--but [the problem] is Cerrato. I don’t particularly respect the guy.”
Cerrato, who went to Notre Dame, also has watched Jimmy Clausen in person. That makes sense considering the Redskins are expected to take a quarterback early in this year’s draft.
It’s a little strange, though, that Cerrato invited Clausen to be a guest on his radio show this week. (Cerrato’s choice to be a radio host remains odd.) Cerrato has already scouted Clausen in person. Now he’s asking him to Clausen to scout himself on air.
Dan Steinberg of DC Sports Bog writes a great summary of the the discussion, a fitting snapshot of this bizarre moment in time during this bizarre era of Redskins football.
The lines between scout, G.M., owner, and radio host are as ill defined and blurry as Washington’s method of calling offensive plays.
