Another day, another win for the suddenly unstoppable Columbus Blue Jackets.
They extended their winning streak to 16 games on Tuesday with a 3-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers, and are now just one win away from tying the NHL record for the longest winning streak in league history, a mark that is currently owned by the 1992-93 Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Blue Jackets have a chance to match it on Tuesday against Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals.
If they are able to win that game, they would have a chance to break the record on Saturday against the New York Rangers.
The Blue Jackets used an incredible special teams effort on Tuesday to keep the streak going that included a pair of power play goals from Cam Atkinson and William Karlsson, and a dominant penalty kill that not only shut down the Oilers’ power play, but also created a number of shorthanded opportunities.
The win not only extends the Blue Jackets’ winning streak, but it also extends their lead on top of the NHL standings and gives them 58 points in 36 games. They now have a three point lead over the Pittsburgh Penguins in two fewer games. After starting the season with a 2-3-1 record in their first six games Columbus has put together a 25-2-3 record in the 30 games that followed.
Along with the current winning streak, the Blue Jackets have now earned at least a point in 18 consecutive games, a stretch that has seen them go 17-0-1 dating back to Nov. 25. On that night they defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning and then lost in a shootout to Florida the very next night. Three days later they beat Tampa Bay again to start their current winning streak.
They have outscored their opponents by a 64-27 margin during the streak.
