Video: Nicolas Deslauriers receives match penalty for spearing

Sabres’ forward Nicolas Deslauriers received a match penalty for spearing during the third period of Buffalo’s 6-1 loss to the St. Louis Blues Tuesday night.

Deslauriers received the penalty for his spear on Blues’ forward Vladimir Tarasenko.

Here’s the play:

Deslauriers will likely be hearing from the NHL’s Department of Player Safety as a result of the match penalty. NHL Rule 21.2 reads:

In addition to the match penalty, the player shall be automatically suspended from further competition until the Commissioner has ruled on the issue.

Rangers defenseman John Moore was assessed a match penalty for his hit on Minnesota’s Erik Haula last month and received a five game suspension.
