Bode Miller‘s status for the World Championships in February is in doubt after he stopped New Year’s Day training due to his surgically repaired back, according to The Associated Press.

Miller, the most decorated U.S. Olympic skier with six medals, had surgery to repair a herniated disk in his back Nov. 17. He is 37 years old.

Miller said his back feels like he’s “balancing two pool balls on top of each other,” according to the AP, which reported he will continue training and reassess after a downhill training run in Wengen, Switzerland, on Jan. 13.

His original hoped-for competitive return was for a Wengen downhill Jan. 17. The first World Championships race is a super-G on Feb. 4 in Beaver Creek, Colo.
