Kelly Clark showed that at 31, she is still quite capable of beating women half her age.
Clark, the three-time Olympic medalist, won the Dew Tour Mountain Championships snowboard halfpipe in Breckenridge, Colo., on Saturday.
Her first-run score of 95.5, highlighted by a 1080, was enough to hold off 14-year-old Chloe Kim, who was too young for the Sochi Olympics and wasn’t alive when Clark made her Winter X Games debut. Kim scored 95. World champion Arielle Gold took third with 90.5.
“That was my stock run, I don’t look to other people to determine the tricks I’m going to do,” Clark said, according to DewTour.com. “I’ve definitely come up short here the last few years, and I look at how I was riding this time last year... It shows a lot of personal growth, and that’s what it’s about for me, to start this season off here — it makes me excited to see where I can push my snowboarding to.”
Gold’s older brother, Taylor, won the men’s halfpipe with a 90.5. Sochi silver medalist Ayumu Hirano of Japan was fifth. Gold’s Olympic teammates Greg Bretz and Danny Davis were eighth and ninth, respectively.
Torin Yater-Wallace won the men’s ski halfpipe with a second-run 95.25, beating Olympic champion David Wise.
U.S. Olympian Keri Herman won the women’s ski slopestyle final with a first-run 87.5. Herman, who was 10th in Sochi, beat a field that included Olympic bronze medalist Kim Lamarre of Canada.
The Dew Tour Mountain Championships conclude Sunday with men’s ski and snowboard slopestyle finals, including Sochi medalists Joss Christensen, Gus Kenworthy and Nick Goepper.
