The United States has a man on Olympic marathon podium for the first time in 12 years, as Galen Rupp ran a personal best 2:10:05 to claim bronze in Rio on Sunday.
Rupp finished 1:21 behind the winner, Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge. Ethiopia’s Feyisa Lilesa was 11 seconds ahead of Rupp and took silver.
Fellow USA runner Jared Ward also ran a PB, finishing sixth, while Meb Keflezighi -- who claimed silver in 2004 -- finished 33rd.

Rupp joined the race for gold with about 20km to go, separating himself from the pack.
American men have thrice won Olympic gold, the last time being Frank Shorter’s 1972 win in Munich, and have three silvers. This is the fourth bronze.
American women have two medals since the marathon was introduced to women in 1984, with Joan Benoit taking gold in 1984 and Deena Kastor finishing third in 2004.
