Rio Olympic Village

The 2016 Olympic Village, where athletes and officials will live during the Rio Olympics, is more than 50 percent constructed, organizers said Thursday.

Seventeen of the 31 buildings have been erected for the west Rio de Janeiro village at the first Olympics in South America, with the capacity to house more than 18,000 guests.

Construction, which began in July 2012, is scheduled to finish in the first half of 2016. The Rio Olympic Opening Ceremony is Aug. 5.

The 31 buildings will include 3,604 apartments, 10,160 bedrooms, 10,150 bathrooms and more than 18,000 beds.
