U.S. skier Mikaela Shiffrin didn’t land on the podium in the giant slalom, but some saw flashes of brilliance. It’s the women’s slalom where she is expected to dominate, even at 18. The first run kicks off at 7:45 a.m. ET and the second one goes at 11:15 a.m. ET.

If Shiffrin wins a medal on Friday, five different U.S. Alpine skiers will get on the podium in Sochi. That matches a U.S. record set in 1984.

Austria’s Marlies Schild might be the specialist favorite while other big-name skiers Maria Hoefl-Riesch (Germany) and Tina Maze (Slovenia) could be medal threats in their own right.

Despite her age, many are asking if Shiffrin will be “the next Lindsey Vonn.” That journey could begin for real today.
